I built a DIY coffee roast color sensor to find out just how “chalked” big-brand beans really are. Using a spectrometer, a custom dark box, and a MATLAB app, I measured the actual roast color of Starbucks beans at 645 nm to see if they’re genuinely burned or just dark and dramatic.
In this video I walk through the build (sensor, enclosure, calibration, grind control), explain how roast color actually works, and then put Starbucks’ light and dark roasts to the test. If you care about flavor, data, stop buying these coffee beans pls.
