Program Notes:
A Troubadour was a lyric poet or poet-musician, often of knightly rank, who flourished from the 11th to the end of the 13th century, chiefly in the south of France and the north of Italy and whose major poetic subject was courtly love.
These poems by Jean Valmy-Baisse also feature themes of courtly love, beginning with Rassa, an ode to a woman’s pure appearance and noble blood. The rhyme scheme stands out, as each stanza only contains one rhyme: AAAAAA BBBBBB. Belle dame de mon émoi is spoken by a suffering lover. In the first stanza, he laments the coldness of his beloved and states that all men who love her must suffer, but in the second, resolves not to give his fragile heart to someone so flighty. The final troubadour song, Je suis tombé, juxtaposes the feeling of being ensnared and trapped by love with the honesty of the aesthetic.
