Lingayen, now the capital of Pangasinan, was founded in 1614 by Augustinian missionaries and Spanish conquistadors. It was named after a large tamarind tree in the town plaza that passersby would look back at, giving rise to the name "Liñgayen". Lingayen played a significant role in World War II, serving as the landing site for Allied forces during the Lingayen Gulf landings.
