The universe is articulated into being, and the classes of consonants in the Sanskrit alphabet are said to correspond directly to the categories of existence ("tattvas"). The five classes of consonants, from 'ka' to 'ma', map out the entire structure of the manifest world.
They represent the journey from the grossest elements, like earth, up through the subtle senses, the organs of action, the mind, the ego, and finally to the principle of the limited individual soul, the "puruṣa." Each consonant is not an arbitrary symbol but a sonic key to a specific level of reality.
To understand this is to see the human body and the cosmos as a text, a divine utterance where every level of being, from the earth beneath our feet to the principle of our own individuality, is encoded in the very structure of sound. The alphabet becomes a tool for navigating reality, a way of understanding the systematic unfolding of the one into the many.
