According to trial testimony and evidence, on March 25, 2024, William “Bill” Brock received a series of phone calls from a man claiming to be an attorney named “Joe,” along with another caller posing as a judge. The callers told Brock that his grandson had been arrested after a serious car accident involving a pregnant woman and that $24,000 was needed for bond — later reduced to $12,000.
The callers instructed Brock not to tell anyone about the situation, claimed a gag order was in place, and told him a woman in a black Honda would collect the money.
That woman turned out to be Loletha Hall, an Uber driver who said she was simply there to pick up a package.
What happened next was captured in part on dashcam footage.
Brock told police he feared for his life, retrieved his firearm, and during a struggle shot Hall six times. After she collapsed, Brock called 911. Police later answered additional calls from the scammers — who never showed up.
THE CHARGES
Prosecutors charged Brock with:
3 counts of murder
1 count of felonious assault
1 count of kidnapping
The kidnapping charge stemmed from allegations that Brock prevented Hall from leaving and told her she could not return to her vehicle.
THE PROSECUTION VS. THE DEFENSE
Prosecutors argued:
Loletha Hall was unarmed
She was an unsuspecting Uber driver
Brock’s actions were unreasonable
He relied on the words of a scammer, not an immediate threat
The defense argued the shooting was lawful self-defense, claiming:
Brock was not the initial aggressor
He honestly believed he was in imminent danger
Using a weapon was necessary under the circumstances
The level of force was reasonable based on his perception of the threat
The defense also suggested Hall may not have been entirely innocent — a claim the prosecution strongly disputed.
THE VERDICT
After deliberating for just over one hour, the jury found William Brock guilty on all five counts.
Brock was remanded into custody following the verdict and is currently awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for January 21, 2026.
Did the jury make the right call?
