"Le Douze de Decembre" is a charming minuet composed by Ignatius Sancho (c. 1729–1780).
This version may be used as a performance piece when taking the Piano Grade 1 Exam, of various examination boards such as ABRSM, RSL (Rockschool), Trinity College London, MTB (Music Teachers Board), LCME and others.
Here, it is performed at a comfortable tempo of 100 beats per minute. The indicated tempo: Allegro con spirito, can be interpreted as anything between 120 and 152 bpm. Playing slightly slower or faster is generally acceptable and does not affect grading, provided the performance remains steady and captures the overall mood of the piece. Of course, playing at the indicated tempo is always preferable.

Ignatius Sancho is a truly fascinating figure in history:
The Composer: Born on a slave ship in the Atlantic, Sancho eventually became a celebrated British composer, actor, and writer.
A Pioneer: He was the first known Black person to vote in a British general election and the first to have an obituary published in British newspapers.
The Music: His compositions, like this one, are typical of the Late Baroque/Early Classical transition—elegant, rhythmic, and designed for the social dances of 18th-century London.
The title translates to "The Twelfth of December." It’s a short but bright example of the ballroom music that helped Sancho establish himself in London's high society.
