🔲 Contract-Relax Technique

▫️Here, I am demonstrating a contract-relax technique to improve overhead shoulder motion specifically into the flexion direction. A contract-relax technique involves contracting the muscles that are tight or preventing range of motion, and then relaxing and pushing into a stretch.
▫️The ideology behind this technique is muscles tend to relax better after a contraction. It is important that after improving range of motion that you follow up with exercises to work the tissues with this new available range of motion. Such exercises can include stability drills, strength drills, or even further range of motion exercises.
▫️With overhead athletes, most tend to have fairly good range of motion especially into the external rotation direction but lack into internal rotation. Stability drills and exercises geared towards stability in the overhead position are usually needed in this population. Follow my page for exercises that I would prescribe to these athletes!
