Battle of Lützen – 1632
The Battle of Lützen was fought on November 16, 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War and became one of the most dramatic clashes of the entire conflict. The Swedish forces, led by King Gustavus Adolphus, faced the Imperial army commanded by Albrecht von Wallenstein on the mist-covered plains near the town of Lützen in present-day Germany.
Wallenstein had entrenched his army along the road, strengthening his position with field fortifications and artillery batteries. Thick fog covered the battlefield, delaying the fighting until late morning. When the mist finally lifted, the Swedish troops advanced with determination, singing hymns and moving forward under heavy cannon and musket fire.
Gustavus Adolphus personally led cavalry charges to break the Imperial line. In the swirling smoke and fog, the king became separated from his escort, was shot several times, and fell from his horse. He died on the field, and news of his death spread quickly through the Swedish ranks.
Despite the loss of their king, the Swedish soldiers continued the assault. Under the command of Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar, they captured Wallenstein’s artillery and forced the Imperial army to withdraw from the battlefield. The Swedes held the ground at the end of the day, but their victory came at the greatest possible cost.
Lützen is remembered as the moment when the “Lion of the North” fell, yet his army fought on and secured a decisive victory. The battle cemented Gustavus Adolphus’s legacy as one of Europe’s most brilliant military leaders and ensured Sweden remained a major power in the war even after his death.
Lyrics:
Cold November, iron sky, banners black and gold
Cannons thunder, muskets cry, stories to be told
Lion of the North rides out, leading from the front
Fog and smoke conceal the field, men bear war’s brunt
Imperial lines ahead of us, Wallenstein prepared
Steel and fire clash as one, none will be spared
Snow and ash upon the ground, death is drawing near
History is written here
Through the smoke — hear the call
Forward march — never fall
For the crown — steel and faith
Onward into fate
LÜTZEN! — fire in the fog tonight
Charging hooves and flashing steel in flight
Lead and thunder split the sky
Kings are mortal — legends never die
LÜTZEN! — echo of a dying roar
Victory gained but paid in war
On the field where heroes bled
The Lion of the North lies dead
Carolean battalions march, steady through the flame
Broken earth and shattered bones, none will be the same
In the chaos of the fight, the king is torn away
Shot and bleeding in the mud, dying in the fray
“No retreat and never yield!” captains scream aloud
Swedish banners wave in smoke, battered but unbowed
Wallenstein retreats at last, beaten but not gone
Victory at dusk — but the king is gone
Through the smoke — hear the call
Forward march — never fall
For the crown — steel and faith
Onward into fate
LÜTZEN! — fire in the fog tonight
Charging hooves and flashing steel in flight
Lead and thunder split the sky
Kings are mortal — legends never die
LÜTZEN! — echo of a dying roar
Victory gained but paid in war
On the field where heroes bled
The Lion of the North lies dead
Sixteen thirty-two!
Lützen — blood and dew
Wallenstein won’t yield
Bodies on the field
Glory carved in pain
Snow mixed red with rain
Sweden mourns its king
Still the soldiers sing
LÜTZEN! — fire in the fog tonight
History burning fierce and bright
Though the king has fallen there
Sweden’s legacy fills the air
LÜTZEN! — carved into the stone
Empire shaken to the bone
In the smoke where he died
The Lion still rides
