Before the 15th century, it was known by many names like the Erythraean Sea and the Sea of India.
In the 15th–16th century, when European explorers began trading with India, they noticed India’s long coastline and central location in this ocean.
Because India was the main hub of ancient trade routes, they started calling it the “Indian Ocean”, and that name stayed forever. 🌍🇮🇳
