A 'splitter' place cell recorded as a part of https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.15986.
Place cells normally have few place fields which are primarily modulated by the spatial location of the animal. However, in a navigation task these fields can also encode additional information. For instance, this cell has a place field in the start box of the maze, but only really expresses this when the rat is planning to take the left route to the middle goal box. We call this prospective activity and cells which exhibit this activity 'splitter' cells. Recorded by Roddy Grieves at the University of Edinburgh, Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems in the lab of Dr. Paul Dudchenko and Dr. Emma Wood.
