The controversy erupted after the BCI temporarily directed state bar councils to withhold enrolment of NALSAR University's 2026 graduating batch following a dispute surrounding student opposition to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant's participation in the university's convocation. The BCI subsequently withdrew the enrolment restriction after strong criticism and judicial intervention.

The Bombay Bar Association has now sharply criticised Mishra's handling of the matter, calling it an abuse of power and arguing that he should have resigned.
