This short film was made for Dartington International Summer School in July 2021, when I couldn't be there in person. The original plan for my time at @DartingtonTrust was to explore 17th-century domestic musical practice without putting on normal concerts, and this set of 5 pieces for solo lyra viol attempts to convey a bit of that vibe. Each piece is recorded in a single take in a different setting, using different microphone and camera setups, almost as a kind of etude in the practice of recording lyra viol music.
The viol was made by Marc Soubeyran in 2012 and is a copy of the small John Rose bass in the Kessler collection. The strings are from Valentin Oelmüller at Pure Corde, and the bow is by Gerhard Landwehr. Each of these three master craftsmen has influenced my playing and understanding of this repertoire more than I can express in words.
