Highguard was never going to succeed after its Game Awards announcement. The game already had a bad reputation, getting dislike-bombed on YouTube and suffering from a complete lack of strong marketing. From the start, Highguard felt like a game that was set up to fail.

After playing the game, I believe Highguard’s biggest issue is that it’s simply boring. There are barely any opportunities for gunfights, and the large open areas make absolutely no sense for a 3v3 game mode. It was a horrible design choice. The game tried to do a lot but ultimately accomplished very little.

The characters are plain and forgettable, and because there are so few gunfights, the gunplay is never expanded upon or allowed to shine. That’s a real shame, but it’s honestly what many of us expected going into the Highguard launch.

On top of that, the ridiculously long queue times and the inability to consistently fill matches with enough players at launch only make things worse. Overall, it’s not looking good for Highguard right now — but who knows, maybe the developers can still turn things around.
