A U-S official says the United States' peacekeeping role in Africa is misunderstood and the country remains committed to assisting in crises on the world's poorest continent.

The U-S has been criticized in recent years for its refusal to intervene in Africa crises.

Speaking in Kenya, the special coordinator for the U-S-sponsored African Crisis Response Initiative (ACRI), said U-S involvement in crises was decided as each situation arose.

U-S troops haven't been deployed to Africa as part of an intervention force or peacekeeping mission since leaving Somalia in 1994 after 18 American troops were killed there.

0017 The United States will spend about five (m) million dollars on two exercises during the next 12 months and will also provide non-lethal equipment to Kenyan forces for future peacekeeping missions.
