Project 58 features a quasi-complementary output stage capable of delivering more than 200 watts into 8Ω or more than 450 watts into 4Ω.
The prototype can be connected with power supply rails ranging from ±55VDC to ±75VDC. At ±65VDC rails, the prototype produces 42.8Vrms before clipping occurs across an 8Ω load with a 1KHz at 2.88Vp-p sine wave input signal. This amounts to a measured power output of 228.98 watts into 8Ω or a whooping 915.92 watts at 2Ω -dependent on an adequate power supply.
The performance is about the same as any emitter-follower output stage topology. However, the quasi-complementary output stage topology has cost-effective advantage over the full complementary designs, and you can use as many NPN power transistors without the need of any matching PNP types.
Surprisingly, the prototype does work, but not recommended, with ±5VDC power supply rails and still produces an amazing decent audio quality. The prototype was also tested into a 2Ω load with no problems.
