Declared a National Monument on June 16, 1910, Sesimbra Castle is the last sea castle well-preserved to this day.
Sesimbra Castle is the last of the Portuguese seaside castles to preserve a medieval moat. Declared a national monument on June 16, 1910, there are many attractions within its walls. Its walls offer a unique view of the village and the sea. Inside are his two permanent exhibits on its history, a heritage interpretation center, a church and a cemetery for the disabled. We also offer museum tours that allow visitors to autonomously enjoy different points of interest on the property. Visitors can walk through the walls and enjoy stunning views of the village of Sesimbra and the area. The cafeteria with terrace offers local specialties. In the landscape, it stands out for its striking nature.
Sesimbra Castle's origins date back to his 9th century, when Muslims occupied the fief. Conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1165 and defeated by the Almohads in 1191. Its decisive reconquest took place in 1199 on the initiative of Monarch D. Sancho I. Sancho I attributed the first charter to the village of Sesimbra, then inside the monument.
During the Middle Ages, the castle was the subject of numerous expansions due to its strategic importance in defending the kingdom's sea and land borders.
From the 15th century onwards, with the development of maritime activities such as fishing and shipbuilding, the population of Povoa Ribeirinha increasingly settled around the bay. In 1516, when he was visited by D. Jorge de Lencastre, Master of the Order of Santiago, there were already clear signs of abandonment, which increased in the following centuries. The monument's progressive deterioration was finally addressed between 1933 and 1945, with conservation work sponsored by the Directorate General of Buildings and National Monuments.
Represents irregular vegetation covering the entire top of the slope. The result is the Alcásova and the keep and turrets, with the rest of the perimeter containing vicious fences protected by door turrets and a tower at the western end.
