Chitina was once a bustling hub during the heyday of copper mining, and remnants of this industrial past still dot the landscape. One of the highlights of this trip is the ascent to Thompson Pass, a gateway to the coastal town of Valdez. Known for its heavy snowfall, Thompson Pass is often shrouded in a mystical fog, creating an ethereal atmosphere as you wind your way up the steep, curving roads. The pass, which reaches an elevation of 2,805 feet, offers panoramic views of the surrounding Chugach Mountains.
