Integration by substitution is carried out when integrating the product of two functions, where one function is the derivative of the other. The integral is of the form: integral of f(x) × f'(x). Let u = f(x), then du/dx = f'(x). dx = du/f'(x). Therefore we have Integral of u × f'(x) × du/f'(x) = integral u×du.
