Hey there neighbors, Kevin with etrailer. And today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the etrailer electric trailer brakes here on our enclosed trailer. If you are noticing a decrease in your stopping power from your trailer brakes, it's probably a good time to actually go back there and take a look at those and see if it is in need of replacement or maybe you have some other kind of issue going on. In our case today, we went to repack the bearings on our trailer and ended up finding out that there was grease blown out of the back of the grease seal and all over the trailer brakes. Now if that happens to you, any kind of contaminant with that grease getting onto the actual brake shoes is going to be a instant replacement. As soon as they get contaminated with that grease, they are no longer going to be able to create friction with our hub and that is going to be our stopping power.
So if those brakes aren't actually stopping us, then it's really time to replace 'em. So when it comes time to figure out exactly what kind of brakes you're gonna need for this, you're gonna have two options when it comes to electric drum brakes and that's gonna be whether you want manual adjust, which means you'll have to get back behind the brake assembly, open up that little plug that's on the plate and adjust the sprocket as needed so that way the brake shoes expand enough to keep matching up with our hub. There's also going to be self-adjusting, which is actually what we installed today, and that's just gonna automatically do that for you as you keep hitting the brakes. That sprocket is going to keep adjusting out and pushing the brake shoes out so that way we're getting that maximum stopping power when we are trying to stop with our trailer. Now to figure out exactly which one you want, you're gonna wanna check your axle.
So on the middle of the axle there'll typically be a tag. If your axles are a little bit older, sometimes that tag can wear off. At that point, we need to figure out what capacity it has. So if you do have that tag, it'll be really easy to spot the capacity on it. And if you don't, then you're gonna wanna start looking at the diameter of the axle tube.
Typically you have a three inch axle tube, you're gonna be in that 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound capacity. And then from there what you can do is you can kind of come up here, look at your hub and get some part numbers off that hub and then figure out exactly what you're gonna need to replace it with. The last way to actually check this would be also just measuring the hub itself and the trailer brake assembly. So with this specific one, it's going to be a 12 inch diameter with about a two inch thickness to it. So if you take those measurements, you can easily just plug it in and find exactly the correct replacement.
So as far as installation goes, electric trailer brakes are super easy to install. There's really not much to it. You're just gonna have to actually jack up your trailer. You wanna lift it up by the frame so that way you can let those axles hang free and we get the wheels off. We'll then pop off our wheels, take our hub off. And usually all you have to do is just pop out your outer bearing and the axle nut, get that out of the way. And then you can actually gain access to the bolts that are actually holding on the hub to the axle. From that point on, it's just a simple swap out. You will need a torque wrench, you're gonna wanna torque down those nuts when you reinstall that new backing plate. And then from there it's really just reassembling your hub and wheels, torquing those wheels as soon as you have 'em back on there. And that's pretty much it. So this is something I think you could do at home, but if you just don't have the space or the tools or even just the time to do so, then please feel free to use our dealer locator. You can enter in your zip code and find a shop near you to get 'em professionally installed. Now if y'all wanna do this yourself, stick around and I'll walk you through the process. (power tool whirring) I like to throw down a couple of shop tiles because we're gonna have some components falling out of here that we wanna save. And there's gonna be some grease that's left over in here. And if at any point water got into here, it's gonna be real gross. So we wanna make sure that we're keeping our floor nice and clean. And
