Critical GenAI Literacies in Language Teacher Education and Development: Cases from Hong Kong

This seminar explores emerging research on pre-service and novice language teachers' engagement with generative AI (GenAI) within teacher education. The first article presents a multiple-case study of five Hong Kong pre-service teachers (PSTs), examining how they invest in various GenAI literacies through their identities as learners, bilingual writers, and future educators. It highlights the ideological spaces where PSTs' dispositions are shaped by their resource access and perceptions of AI's affordances and constraints, emphasizing the importance of integrating critical GenAI literacy in language teaching. The second article investigates two novice Hong Kong teachers from diverse backgrounds, analyzing their critical digital literacies involving GenAI. Using the L2 investment framework, it underscores the complex interplay of symbolic and material resources, identities, and ideological spaces, advocating for stakeholder support to foster critical engagement with AI in teacher development. The third study tracks pre-service English teachers' progression during a ChatGPT-integrated course, revealing how they develop AI literacy as situated social practices. It emphasizes balancing recognition of AI’s strengths with critical awareness of its limitations, illustrating how AI mediates professional identity construction and pedagogical practices. Collectively, these articles highlight the vital role of critical, identity-aware GenAI literacy development in preparing language teachers for AI-empowered classrooms.
