Mazda’s CX-60 has been praised for its polished, upscale vibe, but Japan’s AutoExe tuner just reminded everyone that an SUV can be both handsome and rugged — at least in spirit. Unveiled as the Active XRoss package at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the AutoExe CX-60 swaps showroom poise for rally-inspired aggression: flared fenders, skid plates, mud flaps, and bold exterior trims give the big Mazda a ready-for-gravel look.
AutoExe’s kit is comprehensive: pronounced fender extensions with faux bolt detailing, aluminum-finished skid plates front and rear, and a matte black grille and rear spoiler extensions that lend a purposeful stance. For a more extreme look, the tuner offers matte hood decals, red mud flaps, additional LED driving lamps integrated into a reinforced bumper and protective door-handle overlays — small visual cues that add up to a much tougher aesthetic.
Under the skin, the show CX-60 sits on 18-inch Rays alloys wrapped in Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, and buyers can opt for a suspension lift kit that raises ride height by 25 mm (about 1 inch). That’s paired with chassis reinforcements like new cross, tower and arm braces to stiffen the structure — changes aimed more at durability and improved feedback than outright off-road conquest.
AutoExe didn’t ignore the cabin. The tuner kept interior tweaks tasteful: a flat-bottom Nappa leather steering wheel, carbon trim inserts, paddle shifters, and a beefy aluminum shift knob that lean into the sporty theme without turning the CX-60 into a race car cockpit. For those who want the full mechanical treatment, AutoExe offers upgraded intake and a carbon suction kit and even a quad-exit sports muffler to give the CX-60 a throatier soundtrack.
Most of these enhancements were showcased on a plug-in hybrid demo car. That PHEV setup pairs Mazda’s 2.5-liter SkyActiv gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery for a combined output near 323 hp and torque around 500 Nm — figures that mean the modified CX-60 has enough grunt to match its aggressive looks.
If you like mixing form and function, there’s also a cost to consider. AutoExe’s full kit (minus aftermarket wheels and lift) rings up around ¥1,515,210 (~$9,500) on top of the CX-60’s starting price in Japan. Individual pieces are sold a la carte, too: fender extensions, skid plates, grills and mufflers each have separate price tags for buyers who prefer to pick and choose.
AutoExe’s Active XRoss package is a reminder that SUVs are blank canvases: with the right parts, a luxury-leaning crossover can be given a rally-bred persona without losing all the refinement that made it desirable in the first place. If you’re the type who likes weekend trails and weekday meetings, AutoExe just made the CX-60 speak both languages.
