Описание: "The claymore was a finger's length from my face, I tell you! Had I not had my shield, I'd be a dead man." Arvar let out a chuckle and brought a tankard of mead to his mouth. "Knocked the weapon away and then smashed him in the head so hard he was spitting teeth! Didn't stop beating him until he'd finally stopped moving."
Arvar regaled the long table with stories of his battles and hard-fought victories. Seated alongside him was Herja, who had found herself as his new advisor of sorts, along with Ulva, Haki, and Ragna. Further down the table was Vinkona, feverishly gorging on her plate of cooked meats, Noriko, and the wandering ex-cultist Volundr. The table had been the sight of many tales of combat and adventure, most everyone sharing their own stories. Most everyone except Volundr, who offered little more than nods of acknowledgement to the others as he ate his dinner.
"Anyone else got anything worth sharing?" Arvar asked the table, attention shifting over to Noriko. "Samurai, you've been quiet."
"I've little to share, really." Noriko responded simply, motioning for the rest of the table's attendants to keep talking.
"Oh, come now - that can't be true! You've been following Volundr and Vinkona for HOW long? You must have something to share!" Arvar prodded her.
Noriko shrugged her shoulders. "Nothing you haven't already heard before...and nothing I'm keen on revisiting. Thank you."
Arvar nodded slowly. Though Noriko had reached acceptance and overcome the worst of her pain, he knew better than to try and reopen healed scars. His attention then shifted to Volundr.
"Surely the Serpent Slayer has something to share with us, then." Arvar gestured to Volundr. "Come, tell us a tall tale."
Volundr glanced up from his seasoned cuts of meat, all eyes now on him. He took in a long exhale from his nose and sighed. "Well, what do you want to hear?" He asked.
"What's the fiercest battle you've ever fought?" Haki inquired, leaning over the table.
"Aye, Volundr. You've faced many an opponent in your day." Ragna commented. "Whose been the most formidable?"
Volundr gazed at them all from where he sat, fingers absentmindedly rubbing against his tankard of ale. Silence fell over the table for several seconds as Volundr's eyes drifted elsewhere. Arvar cocked his head to the side.
"Was it Noriko?" He joked, prompting a laugh from the rest of the table. Even Noriko herself stifled a small giggle.
Volundr clutched his tankard and pressed the rim to his lips, taking a large swig before slamming it back down on the table, huffing out his answer.
"The Worm King."
The mood of the table shifted noticeably, the previous high-spirited and boisterous mood of the table crumbling away into a tense silence. Arvar watched Volundr intently for a moment, before his eyes began to fall to his plate, mind storming with images of Ormakongur's attack on Geirmund's Landing, and all the carnage that followed.
"And I believe there's little else to say about him." Volundr mused, sitting back in his table. The silence persisted for several seconds longer before Volundr let out another sigh and got up. "Forgive me - I need...I need some time alone."
Volundr exited the longhouse, eyes following him as he stepped out the front entrance and into the empty village streets, the night sky above glistening with distant stars. He wandered in silence before finding himself at the docks, boats bobbing in the inky surf, the scent of sea salt enveloping him. He didn't know how long he stood there. Only that, inexplicably, someone eventually came to stand beside him. Noriko.
"I'm not in much of a mood either." She commented, crossing her arms over her chest and taking in the sight of the vast dark sea sprawling out before them both. "No offense to Jarl Arvar, of course."
"Forgive me, I'm-"
"It's alright, Volundr."
"I'm tired."
"More strange dreams?"
"No, not that. I'm..." He let out a dejected heave. "Do you ever feel like this is all we have? That this is the only thing we're here for?"
"What's that?"
"War."
Noriko thought to herself for a moment, before nodding. "Sometimes I do, yes."
"I've been doing this for so long Noriko. The pits, the cult, the mercenary life - everything I do is tied to war. The Vikings revel in it. It's as intrinsic to their daily lives as eating. They revel in the idea of the Great Hall and a worthy death at the end of a sword. It's...it's exhausting. Everything I've seen and done, it's-"
Noriko rested a gentle hand on his shoulder, looking into his eyes intently. "It's okay, Volundr. You're not the only warlike people here." She told him, glancing back out at the sea. "And you're not the only one who wishes it weren't the case."
The both of them stood out on the docks in silence, gazing out at the starry sea, moon lingering overhead, pale as bone.
