Once prosperous and home to nearly 15,000 people in the 1930s, Cairo has experienced a long decline. Founded in the 1830s, the city initially thrived after the Civil War. But starting in the mid-1900s, economic decline and racial tensions drove most residents away, leaving behind many abandoned yet beautiful buildings and vintage homes that serve as haunting reminders of Cairo's more prosperous past.
