In this lesson we learn the G power chord across the D, G, and B strings, using the same movable shape in different positions.
Power chords only use two notes: the root and the fifth. That’s all you need because the fifth reinforces the root without defining whether the chord is major or minor. The third (which determines major vs minor) is intentionally left out.
This makes power chords neutral and ambiguous — they sit between major and minor. That ambiguity is a huge part of what gives metal its character: dark, open, aggressive, and emotionally flexible.
That’s also why learning full triads isn’t essential for metal. Triads lock you into a specific emotional color (happy/sad), while power chords stay raw and undefined, letting distortion, riffs, and context do the emotional work instead.
Two notes. Maximum impact.
That’s the logic behind almost every heavy riff ever written. 🔥
