He had served as Governor of the erstwhile state when the Pulwama terror attack killed around 40 CRPF jawans in 2019. The BJP leader later became a vocal critic of the central government. In his final years, he made several explosive revelations and accusations against the government. However, while he took on his own party leadership, he was not lenient towards the Opposition either — even though his demeanour towards them was eventually perceived as ‘soft’. In an interview with Eshwar on 'Badi Badi Baatein' in February 2024, he spoke at length about his fallout with the party he had served for two decades.
