Jamestown on a Sunday — With History, Aussie Legends and campsite review

Описание: Our Sunday visit to Jamestown didn’t unfold quite as planned, with the shops and the National Trust museum closed, but the town still had plenty to offer. Doug loved the Diggers’ Walk, a thoughtful trail honouring the local men who served in the First World War. Each story along the path brought those soldiers home again—farm boys, railway workers, and young men from the district who returned with memories of distant battlefields. Even without the museum open, Jamestown’s history still found a way to speak.
We stopped in at Robinson Park Reserve for a look around, checking out the campsite and taking in the peaceful setting before continuing our road trip. Even without staying overnight, it gave us a feel for Jamestown’s quieter side — the open spaces, the traces of local heritage, and the stories tied to people like R.M. Williams, whose legend began not far from here. It was a brief visit, but the town still left an impression.
Before leaving town, we wandered along Ayr Street and uncovered two great pieces of local history. Jamestown was once home to Australia’s longest continuously operating butcher shop, serving the community from 1878 right through to 2022. Just nearby stands a bust of Dr John Alexander Cockburn, Jamestown’s first mayor, who went on to become Premier of South Australia and later played a key role in shaping the legislation that led to Federation. It was the kind of unexpected discovery that makes small‑town stops so rewarding.
