We interviewed Molly about her process:

1. What was the inspiration behind this piece?

Films like The Wicker Man and Midsommar were some of the more obvious ones with their pagan aesthetics. Moral Orel is a show I also take inspiration from, as it has a cutesy/childish look but has not so kid friendly plots.

2. What and who are your favourite references and influences?

I like the type of absurdity that comes with cheesy horror movies. Films like Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Army of Darkness that really lean into the ridiculousness are great influences.

3. What was your animation process like?

I skipped a few stages in pre-production- I didn’t make a storyboard, just went straight for an animatic based off a basic idea I had. When making the puppets I didn’t have a solid character design, just some loose sketches and plasticine maquette’s I would refer to while building. When it came to filming, I imported the animatic into Dragonframe to help with time and, since it was all one shot, just went for it.

4. How long did it take you to create?

The whole process from start to finish took a little over two months. The puppets took 4 weeks to put together, and the filming was about a week and a half.

5. What is your favourite part of the process?

Definitely the model making. I enjoy the more tangible aspects of art and working with my hands, whether it be woodcarving, sewing, sculpting etc., so puppet making really rolls all of that into one and for me is a very enjoyable and satisfying process.
