A case of cheating involving hypnosis-like influence and psychological manipulation has once again surfaced in the national capital, where a woman was duped of her gold jewellery and cash by criminals posing as bank officials. The incident took place on January 18, 2026, when a 55-year-old woman, a resident of north-west Delhi, was travelling to her parental home in Uttam Nagar.
According to the police, the woman got down at Haiderpur Bus Stand to change buses. While she was waiting, a young man approached her and started a casual conversation. Moments later, a Santro car stopped nearby. The occupants of the car introduced themselves as bank officials and offered her a lift. The accused appeared well-dressed and spoke confidently, which prevented the woman from suspecting any wrongdoing.
After she sat inside the car, the tone of the conversation changed. The accused told her that incidents of cheating had increased recently and that banks were conducting verification of gold and cash for security reasons. By speaking rapidly and continuously, they created fear and confusion, putting the woman under intense mental pressure. Police officials say this was not actual hypnosis, but a deliberate act of psychological manipulation, where the victim’s ability to think clearly was temporarily overpowered.
Under this mental influence, the woman handed over two gold rings, two gold ear tops and ₹5,000 in cash to the accused. Soon after, the car stopped and she was asked to get down in a hurry. The accused gave her an envelope and fled the spot. When the woman opened the envelope, she found only papers inside, and realised that she had been cheated.
The victim immediately approached the police, and a case was registered at Maurya Enclave Police Station. Despite being a blind case, the police launched a detailed investigation. A special team led by SHO Inspector Madan Meena analysed CCTV footage, technical evidence and local inputs, which helped them trace the Santro car near the Loni Border area.
The police kept the vehicle under surveillance using technical tracking and later followed its movement. Eventually, the main accused was arrested from the Model Town police station area. He was identified as Rahul alias Ajay alias Santosh, a resident of Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Rahul is a habitual offender, declared a proclaimed offender in seven cases, with involvement in nine criminal cases including robbery, snatching and theft. He also disclosed the names of his accomplices, Manoj and Amit, who are currently absconding. The accused admitted that they specifically targeted women and used fear, trust and confusion to mentally overpower victims—an act often mistaken as hypnosis.
The police have recovered the Santro car used in the crime. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused and recover the stolen jewellery and cash. Police have advised the public to remain alert, avoid trusting strangers, and immediately inform authorities if they encounter suspicious individuals or situations.
