We were just about to leave the Spanish Pyrenees, when I spotted one of the richest roadside verges verges I had ever seen: a mass of wild flowers and hosting hundreds of butterflies.
The steep slope and roadside location had prevented over-grazing by cattle, leading to a dense scabious-based mass of colour and the buzz of all kinds of bees and grasshoppers. I spent a delightful hour there, eventually noting a peculiar near white form of either a Mallow or Marbled Skipper. Several other species were also filmed during my hunt for alpine fritillaries, and to try to show the sheer diversity in front of me.
