Warehouse teams who wrap pallets by hand can be at risk of Musculoskeletal Disorder.
This video analyses the risks involved through an assessment by Alex Long, Chartered Physiotherapist from Bespoke Wellbeing Ltd.
Bespoke Wellbeing are a team of specialist occupational health physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and sports therapists with a mission to make a real difference to the health and work-ability of employees across the UK.
The Bespoke Wellbeing team proactively get in front of musculoskeletal injuries to reduce the risk, lower the impact they cause, and help employees return and stay safe at work.
As industry-leading pallet wrap and packaging experts, Mark Barter, MD of Wessex Packaging, invited Bespoke Wellbeing to assess the impact that manually wrapping pallets with stretch film can have on warehouse operatives, with the aim of improving the ergonomics involved, improving efficiency, and importantly improving operatives' wellbeing.
Alex Long, MCSP ACPOHE, Occupational and Physiotherapy Specialist, visited Wessex Packaging's HQ and National Distribution Centre to conduct an on-site assessment of how pallets are usually wrapped by hand, and also comparing that process to using the WRAPIDO™ hand pallet wrapping system.
This assessment had the aim of reducing musculoskeletal risks associated with manual pallet wrapping, as well as improving wrapping productivity and reducing plastic waste.
The process involved a warehouse operative wrapping a pallet of cardboard rolls by hand using a cardboard tube containing plastic pallet film on it.
This process showed the potential musculoskeletal risk factors to the operative's shoulder, knees, neck, wrists and lumbar spine. The video shows areas of the body at risk through the use of red lines indicating where the spine is twisted or rotated; shoulders positioned asymmetrically; pressure on the wrists; finger damage; and the body bent forward.
This detailed assessment clearly demonstrates the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, that affects the joint, bones and muscles, and can also include rarer autoimmune diseases and back pain, when wrapping pallets by hand.
Through Wessex Packaging's product development process, the introduction of the WRAPIDO™ hand pallet wrapping film and dispenser, has created a more ergonomic and improved method of wrapping pallets.
Using the RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) and REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) measurement tools, Alex Long from Bespoke Wellbeing concluded that "...any company, whose line of work involves pallet wrapping, should be confident that using the WRAPIDO™ hand pallet wrapping system as part of their wrapping techniques will be a positive step when implementing a health and wellbeing at work strategy for their employees."
