Barra fishing in the Northern Territory is never boring and at Tomato Island on the Roper River, it turned into absolute chaos. This episode of Wander & Hook has it all:
🐊 Monster crocs sliding past the tinny
🎣 Dave’s barra so strong it rips his rod straight out of his hands, all caught on camera
🔥 Classic NT mate ship, laughs, and fishing action that’ll leave you shaking your head
🎣 What Happens in This Episode
We set up camp at Tomato Island (Big Horse Creek Campground), one of the NT’s most famous barramundi fishing spots. It’s a place where every cast could hook the barra of a lifetime but you’re always sharing the water with crocodiles the size of cars.
The day started like any other fishing session with mates. Richard and Dave worked the banks, chasing barra in the muddy water. Then it happened Dave hooked a monster barramundi that pulled his rod straight out of his hands. The chaos, the laughter, the disbelief… all of it’s right here in this episode.
Between the fishing, we had front-row seats to massive crocs cruising the river, reminding us why you never dangle your hands or fish frames in these waters. This is the NT at its wildest.
🐊 Why Tomato Island is Barra Heaven (and Croc Central)
Tomato Island is a legendary location for barramundi fishing in the NT. Known for its:
✔️ Proximity to the Roper River, one of the best barra systems in Australia
✔️ Easy access to both land-based and boat fishing
✔️ Huge crocodile population that keeps every angler on their toes
✔️ Being a hub for travellers chasing that bucket-list barra
If you’ve ever dreamed of catching a barra in the NT, Tomato Island is on the must-fish list but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
