Описание: The Johnny Marzetti Casserole is, in my opinion, one of the most important and influential dishes in modern American cooking. It’s the forerunner of countless American casseroles — simple, hearty, and designed to feed families on a budget.
Created around 1910 by Teresa Marzetti in Columbus, Ohio, this humble combination of ground beef, onion, tomato sauce, pasta, and cheese became the blueprint for generations of baked dinners. From this one recipe, the entire “American casserole” tradition was born — stretching from church suppers to weeknight classics across the country.
It even inspired parallels abroad — the British “spag bol” (spaghetti bolognese) shares the same DNA: minced beef, mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomato sauce, and pasta.
A true icon of comfort food history — simple, timeless, and still just as satisfying today.

Ingredients
(For an 8 × 8 in / 20 × 20 cm dish — makes 4 servings)
• Ground beef – 400 g (14 oz / about 1 ¼ UK cups / 1 ½ US cups packed)
• Olive oil – 1 tbsp (15 ml)
• Onion, finely chopped – 1 medium (120 g)
• Green bell pepper, chopped – 1 medium (150 g)
• Garlic, minced – 2 cloves (10 g)
• Tinned chopped tomatoes – 1 can (400 g / ≈ 1 ½ UK cups / 1 ¾ US cups / 400 ml)
• Tomato paste – 2 tbsp (30 ml / 34 g)
• Sugar – 1 tsp (4 g)
• Salt – 1 tsp (6 g), or to taste
• Black pepper – ½ tsp (2 g)
• Dried oregano (optional) – ½ tsp (1 g)
• Dried macaroni (or rotini) – 1 UK cup (≈ 1 ¼ US cups / 140 g raw)
• Shredded cheddar or mild cheese blend – 1 UK cup (≈ 1 ¼ US cups / 120 g)
• Extra cheese for topping – ½ UK cup (≈ ⅔ US cup / 60 g)

Optional Extras (1930s onward)
• 2 tbsp (30 ml) Worcestershire sauce for depth
• ½ cup (75 g) sliced mushrooms added with the onion
• Swap ¼ beef for Italian sausage for a richer flavour

Oven 175 °C / 350 °F.
Cover with foil; bake 20 min. Remove foil and bake another 5–10 min until cheese is bubbly and golden.
