Huzaifah's Story: boy with rare disability (AADC) learns to walk in ten days

Born with a rare genetic condition called AADC (Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency), Huzaifah did not have the neurotransmitters necessary for motor development. For the first 6 years of his life, his body was virtually in a vegetative state and even the smallest movements were impossible for him to make. He couldn’t sit, lift his head, eat, or talk, and often suffered from oculogyric crises where his eyes would become frozen and roll upwards for hours at a time. Two years ago, Huzaifah received a pioneering new genetic therapy in which a virus with the genetic code needed for neurotransmitter creation was injected into his brain. To the joy of his parents, this enabled Huzaifah to begin moving his body, but also led to a period of dyskinesia in which his entire body was racked by constant involuntary movements.

Yuji Oka has used Adapted Spiral Praxis to help children with AADC not only tide over this dyskinetic phase following gene therapy but also to help them accelerate their motor learning process when they are ready to learn. This new film chronicles the story of Huzaifah’s recovery, now 2 years after gene therapy, and it shows remarkably how he was able to learn how to stand and walk over a period of just 10 days.
