For more than a century, the size of the House of Representatives has been frozen at 435 seats — and in that same period, the US population has tripled. This means that today, the average representative is responsible for more than 750,000 constituents. Scholars and politicians argue this imbalance helps explain why many Americans feel disconnected from Congress.
Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) has introduced a bill that would expand the House, aiming to restore a vision closer to what the founders intended: a House that expanded with the population. Supporters say more seats could improve representation, but the idea raises a key question: Would a larger House function better — or just add to the gridlock? Vox explores the math, history, and future of a “bigger” American democracy.
