One of the endearing stories of West Indies winning the inaugural 50-over Prudential World Cup in 1975 was diminutive Guyanese batsman Alvin Kallicharran unleashing his power on arguably the fastest bowler at the time, Australian Dennis Lillee.
The left-hander blasted 78 off 83 balls in the seven-wicket win, but it was an intense passage of play that has earned Kallicharran a permanent place in Caribbean cricketing folklore.
In a dramatic 10-ball sequence, Kallicharran took on Lillee in the most destructive fashion, blasting the Australian to all parts of The Oval in England. The onslaught, which yielded 35 runs, read: 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 1, 4, 6, 0, 4.
On a visit to Guyana this month, Kallicharran reflected on the duel with Lillie in an exclusive interview with News Room’s Avenash Ramzan.
