Six mallets give richer chords than four, but they also limit flexibility. Some lines that are easy on four mallets become difficult with six.

Six mallets let you play richer sounds and harmonies than four, but some lines are easier to play with four mallets, and the harmonic structures you can play with six mallets are more limited.

I experimented with a piano-like approach—3 mallets in the left hand, 2 in the right—to play the marimba.
This allows me to play chord accompaniment in the left hand while playing flowing, melodic lines with the right hand.

🎼 Example chords:
C(6/9), CMaj7, A7(13), D7(b13), G7(13), Db(6/9), Bb7(9), Em7/A etc.
There are still many playable chords, and I’d be happy if someone could take this further and develop new ideas from it.

I hope this is helpful for performers exploring similar techniques, and I’d love to share ideas and exchange feedback.
