Engine cylinder Head: The top cover of engine cylinder is called cylinder head. cylinder head is a component of engine which sealed the top portion of engine cylinder.
During the compression stroke when Piston moves towards TDC the charge is compressed between the Piston and cylinder head.
Cylinder head is the very important part of engine.
Material of Cylinder head :
The engine cylinder head is made of cast iron or aluminium alloy.
Cast Iron contains
95% iron, 2.2 % carbon, 1.2% Silicon ,0.63 magnese, 0.12% Sulphur and 0.85% phosphorus.
Aluminium alloy contains
91% aluminium 7% Copper and 2% tin.
Most of the parts of engine are made of these metals.
Cast iron is heavy metal so engines of heavy vehicles are made of cast iron.
But today most of the parts of engine are made of aluminium alloy.
Its advantages:
Aluminium alloy is a good conductor of heat. its heat conductivity is approximately three times of cast iron.
Due to good heat conductivity cooling of aluminium alloys is easy and because of good heat conductivity and good cooling engines having higher compression ratio can be made.
because of higher compression ratio and good cooling effect cooling effect the power output of engine is higher and having lower fuel consumption.
aluminium alloy have some disadvantages: it is a costly metal so the price of engine will be more.
Alluminium is softer than cast iron and its heat expansion is higher than the cast iron. so we have to give more clearance between the parts.
Construction of cylinder head :
cylinder head contains combustion chamber, inlet and exhaust valve ,fuel injector ,heat plug, inlet and exhaust manifold ,cooling fins, cooling jackets ,cooling jackets and some holes for stud,pushrod and engine oil. this will be explained in detail inside the video.
Defects in cylinder head : when we put cold water in hot engine cracks will be produced in cylinder head. cracks can be find with the help of liquid penetrant kit .
sometimes flatness of cylinder head can be checked with the help of straight edge and feeler gauge .
the gap between cylinder head and straight edge cannot be more than 0.05 mm .

The gasket used between cylinder and cylinder head is is called cylinder head gasket or simply called head gasket .it is made of asbestos or copper.
