Who doesn't love a good curry? I sure do! Especially, Sri Lankan Dhal Curry. This classic dish is one of the signature curries in Sri Lankan cuisine. It is a favourite among many. Dhal is one of the protein sources for Vegetarians & Vegans. Even my fussy toddler absolutely love Dhal Curry. If you want to follow along, here is the recipe;
Ingredients:
Split Red Lentils (Rinsed & Drained) - 1 Cup
Red Onion - 1/4 Large one
Curry Leaves Fresh or Dry - 8-10 nos
Fresh Green/ Red Chilli Whole or Roughly Chopped - 2-3 nos
Garlic Sliced Thinly - 4-5 Cloves
Sri Lankan Curry Powder - 1 & 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Chilli Powder - 1-2 tsp
Water - 1 & 3/4 Cup
Salt - to taste
Thick Coconut Milk or Cream - 1/4 to 1/3 Cup
Method
1. In a bowl add the rinsed & drained dhal along with all the ingredients except salt & coconut milk.
2. Partially cover and cook on high heat until it begins to boil. Turn the heat to Med-Low until the Dhal is cooked and looks somewhat transparent.
3. Add salt and coconut milk and stir. Turn the heat to high and stir gently for about 30 seconds until the curry comes back to a boil. Turn off the heat.
4. Serve it with Steamed Rice, Roti, Bread or Noodles as a side dish.

Ape Amma is an amazing cook from Sri Lanka who I admire so much. She teaches traditional recipes on Youtube and her channel is targeted towards fellow Sri Lankans who understands Sinhala. She is a great source to go for recipes that are unfamiliar to anyone. I love her Unroasted Curry Powder recipe as it is much healthier and has ingredients with a lot more medicinal value to our body. I highly recommend her recipe if at all possible. It is one of the tastiest curry powders you can make at home. Disclaimer : My Dhal curry is my own recipe which I have been cooking for many years, however she also has her own version, which you will be able to find on her channel if you are interested.
Sri Lankan Unroasted Curry Powder - Thuna Paha (තුන පහ )
200 g(7 oz/3 cups) Coriander seeds
100 g(3½ oz/1 cup) Cumin seeds
50 g(1½ oz/½ cup) Fennel seeds
4 2.5 cm (1 inch) Cinnamon sticks
20 Fresh Curry leaves - Make sure it is dry and has no moisture at all
Combine everything in a coffee grinder and grind to a fine powder. Store in the pantry for up to 6 months. Source https://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipes/s...
