Joseph Smith Jr. (1805-1844) was an American religious leader and the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism.
According to Smith's accounts, he was chosen by God to restore the true church on Earth, as he believed that all existing Christian denominations had strayed from the original teachings of Jesus Christ. Smith translated what he called the Book of Mormon, which he said was an ancient record of an ancient American civilization written on golden plates.
In 1830, Smith formally established the Church of Christ, which would later become known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He faced significant opposition and persecution throughout his life due to his religious teachings and practices. The early years of the church were marked by migration, settlement, and the development of a unique religious community in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois.
