Anthem is set in a world left unfinished by ancient god-like beings called the Shapers, who abandoned massive, reality-altering machines that still randomly reshape the land through a chaotic force known as the Anthem of Creation.

You play as a Freelancer, a pilot of powerful exosuits called Javelins, working to protect humanity from dangerous Shaper relics and the storms they create. After a failed mission involving the catastrophic Heart of Rage, the Freelancers are scattered, and you gradually rebuild your reputation while uncovering what went wrong.

As you investigate, you discover the Dominion, a militaristic faction led by the Monitor, who seeks to control the Anthem itself to reshape the world for domination. The story follows your efforts to stop the Dominion from activating Shaper technology on a massive scale.

Ultimately, you confront the Monitor in the Heart of Rage and prevent full activation of a world-ending event, but the Anthem remains unstable, leaving ongoing cataclysms and setting up a continuing struggle to understand and contain the Shapers’ legacy.
