Most of the songs I write take a considerable time to finish...They can begin with anything from a melody I come up with, or a chord progression, that then leads to writing lyrics, or they can start with a title or a phrase or even a few lines of verse or chorus...But sometimes, they come out of nowhere. This is one of those. I was playing the chord progression that became the chorus, and the words "will I see you again Virginia" came out of nowhere. Most of the rest of the lyrics came within a very short time. Of course, there was a lot of editing after that. But the entire Idea for the song came out of nowhere...
It's one of my favorite songs and the lyrics won Honorable Mention in American Songwriter's 2025 Annual Lyric Competition
