Catherine O’Hara, Comedy Icon and ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Star, Dies at 71
Mama, I thought we had time...
Tributes From Hollywood
The reaction was immediate and deeply emotional, particularly from those who played her family members on screen.
Macaulay Culkin, who played her son Kevin in the “Home Alone” films, shared a heartbreaking tribute on Instagram. “Mama, I thought we had time,” he wrote, alongside a photo of them together from his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony just two years prior. “I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
Eugene Levy, her frequent collaborator of nearly 50 years, from the Second City stage to “Best in Show” and finally “Schitt’s Creek,” released a brief statement through a representative: “The world is a little less bright today. Catherine was more than a partner; she was the heartbeat of every room she walked into. To have shared a life of laughter with her was the greatest gift of my career.”
Pedro Pascal, who recently worked with her on the upcoming season of “The Last of Us,” posted: “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world.”
Other peers, including Meryl Streep, Martin Short, and Seth Rogen, remembered her as a “comic giant” and a “whipsmart” collaborator.
A Legacy of Laughter
Born in Toronto in 1954, Ms. O’Hara began her career in the mid-1970s at Toronto’s Second City, where she eventually became a founding member of the influential sketch show “SCTV.” It was there that she honed her ability to inhabit wildly eccentric characters, a skill she would later use to transform into the wig-wearing, accent-shifting Moira Rose.
Her film career was equally storied. She became a household name as the panicked Kate McCallister in “Home Alone” (1990) and was a staple of Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries, including “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show.”
In recent years, Ms. O’Hara experienced a massive resurgence in popularity. Her performance in “Schitt’s Creek” earned her an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020, and she had recently earned critical acclaim for her roles in “The Studio” and the second season of “The Last of Us.”
Fans and medical experts also noted her openness regarding her rare condition, dextrocardia with situs inversus—a congenital condition where her heart was on the right side of her chest. While she often joked about being a “freak,” she used her platform to bring awareness to the condition with her trademark wit.
Ms. O’Hara is survived by her husband of 33 years, the production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.
