On November 23, 2025, the UP Diliman Department of Philosophy hosted Linda Zagzebski as she lectured on "Dreams, Fiction, and Skepticism."
The event was hosted by Mikaela Gana and Tatiana Inumerables, both junior students from BA Philosophy. Mikaela Gana was also Project Head for the event.
Abstract:
This lecture begins with Ernest Sosa’s argument against dream skepticism using the imagination model of dreaming. I then present a stronger argument against dream skepticism, arguing that no matter what model of dreaming we use, the meta-stance taken in lucid dreaming is always available to us. I then turn to emotion skepticism in dreams, arguing that if the intentional object of our emotion is not real in a dream, the dream hypothesis threatens us with skepticism about the objects of our waking emotions apart from the truth of our beliefs. Finally, I investigate a parallel to the paradox of fiction that I call the paradox of dreaming, which raises the problem that a rational person lines up her beliefs, emotions, and intentions to act, but they do not line up while dreaming. I conclude that if I am right that we can always tell when we are dreaming, all three forms of skepticism about dreams can be escaped.
