Ice in the South Forecast This Weekend

It was a somewhat rare sight as people woke up yesterday to a winter wonderland along the Gulf Coast beaches. Snowballs in Florida can be made about every 10 years. This one was thrown Sunday morning in fort Walton Beach after 1 to 2 inches of snow fell from the Alabama Shores through Northwest Florida and into central Georgia.

As the storm moved east it caused a water spout in fort Myers florida and airport delays in the northeast.

A separate winter storm shut down a major travel route along I-29 between Fargo North Dakota and Canada yesterday. Highway patrol footage shows the roads at a standstill as gusts near 45 mph blew snow around - reducing visibility near zero for hours.

And a whole new storm system is plunging south from Canada into the southeast again bringing threats of ice accumulations. This forecast map shows icy mixed starting Friday evening in Texas where the exclamation mark icons are -- and heavy snow further north. It's likely that the next storm system won't dip as far south. That would increase chances for ice as warmer air flows in from the Gulf.

Keep a close eye on temperatures and plan accordingly if you are traveling during these storms. State DOT and 511 will be useful resources as more road closures are likely.
