Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a commonly encountered complication of both thoracic and extrathoracic regions in advanced stages of malignancies. The incidence of MPE is estimated to be more than 150,000 new cases every year; most cases are caused due to breast cancer, lung cancer, and lymphoma. Other causes of MPE include cancer that may spread from the stomach, kidney, ovaries, and colon. Keeping the quality of life and palliation is the primary focus of managing MPE.
