The towel-clad figure swung it open before I could knock again. Bennett Ashford. Mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
“Dominic…” he started, voice panicked, fumbling to wrap the towel tighter.
I held up my phone, screen glowing with the camera app. “This will look great in court,” I said calmly, letting the words hang in the damp motel air.
Behind him, Ava clutched the bedsheet to her chest, face pale as freshly fallen snow. She stammered something, trying to explain, but I didn’t let her get a word in.
“No need,” I said. “The picture says it all.”
Bennett tried again, a desperate note in his tone. “Wait, Dominic, I can explain—”
“Explain?” I laughed, and it came out sharper than I intended. “Adults don’t lie about working late. Adults don’t put corporate credit cards to motel rooms. Adults don’t answer the door in towels when they’re supposed to be reviewing case files. You’ve had plenty of minutes. Looks like you’ve been taking them for a while.”
The rain had started, hammering against the tin roof above, drumming like impatient fingers. Neon light flickered, casting everything in alternating shades of red and shadow. Perfect weather for a revelation.
Ava tried to reach me, voice trembling. “Dominic, can we talk?”
I shook my head, phone raised like a gavel. “Talking isn’t necessary. The truth already spoke.”
I turned, leaving them in the pink-and-red glow, and walked back to my car. Every step felt heavy, but deliberate. This wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of clarity, of documentation, of finally knowing exactly where I stood. And for once, I’d let logic and evidence lead the way.
