I throw the B.S. flag on that play, and explain why such a belief is merely an extension of the patriarchal nonsensical mindset that women hold the key to "make" a man do right and treat others well.

Because so many women believe these fantasies, when a man DOESN'T improve or change himself, doesn't stop cheating, doesn't stop lying, or doesn't stop drinking "for our love" the women feel defeated and responsible. Not only that, they also feel unloved, unworthy, ashamed, not good enough, undesirable, and a host of other hurtful emotions.
