Dixit Dominus HWV 232 was completed in April 1707 while Handel was living in Rome. It is Handel's earliest surviving autograph. The work, set for five-part chorus, soloists, strings and continuo, in the form of a sacred cantata, was first performed on 16 July 1707 in the Church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, under the patronage of the Colonna family.
Handel's music matches the spirit of the bright, messianic yet angry, vengeful, furious character of Psalm 109.
