NeoGraft FUE Hair Transplant consultation between Dr. Cory Torgerson and a patient of the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, Carlos.
Carlos has been losing his hair for about 10-15 years and is now basically completely bald and is considered a Norwood Stage 7. The Norwood Scale is a ranking system for Male Pattern Baldness and 7 is the very last stage. The area of the scalp where Carlos is bald is the typical area that is affected by DHT or Dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that is responsible for Androgenetic Alopecia commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness.
In a complimentary consultation Dr. Torgerson will evaluate the cause of the hair loss by assessing the pattern of hair loss as well as by discovering what family members may also suffer from hair loss. It is also important to ask questions about previous medical history that not only may be partially responsible for hair loss but that can also have adverse effects on the transplanted hairs once they have been implanted in the new area. Some common things are Thyroid, Iron, Eczema, Dermatitis, Allergies or any other medications. Smoking can also affect the transplanted hairs.
Once a preliminary assessment has been completed to establish the cause of hair loss as well as the previous medical history it is important to evaluate the donor area. The donor area is the part of the head that Carlos still has hair in this video. This hair is not affected by the DHT that the bald area was. It is necessary to establish how many hairs can safely be taken from the donor area without “overharvesting” or making this area look thin. The hairs from the donor area will be used to replace the hairs that have been lost in other areas. Once they have been taken from the donor area, there will no longer be a follicle to grow hair in this area anymore because it has been moved to the recipient area.
For Carlos, Dr. Torgerson created a hair restoration plan that would consist of 3 procedures at different stages, all of which will use roughly 2000-2500 grafts each. (Anything over 2500 grafts is considered a “mega-session” and the take rate of the grafts will start to go down from an initial 94% take rate) The first stage is to restore his frontal hairline. Once a natural hairline was established with good density the other stages would be to fill in hair throughout the entire top of the head. The frontal hairline is almost always the MOST important part of hair loss to focus on when creating a hair restoration plan. The frontal hairline is what frames the face and as long as you have dense hair in this area it will always look like you have hair.
Once the transplant is complete the hairs that are transplanted will fall out in about 2 weeks and will then grow brand new hairs at around the 3-4 month mark. The most important part of a hair transplant is patience!
If you suffer from hair loss, we look forward to meeting with you for your complimentary consultation.
