Dating to 1950 and released by Wesley Greene, "Shotgun Shooting and How" features Vic Reinders demonstrating
basic essentials in shotgun shooting, with a primer on safe handling. The film was written by Vic Reinders with a screen adaptation by Frances M. Kraft, and was produced by Vernon J. Kraft Film Productions. Vic Reinders was an incredibly accomplished marksman and trapshooter who won the Clay Target Championship with a lone 200 straight in 1958 when he was president of the ATA. He was onmore All-America teams than any other shooter in history, and he set a record for the highest average on 100,000 registered 16-yard targets—.98056—which stood from 1961 to 1974. Vic’s lifetime average remained above the 98% mark until he passed the 140,000 registered target plateau.
0:25 - Vic Reinders provides guidance on developing into a skilled wingshot, emphasizing a method proven effective during his time instructing in the Air Force. 0:38 - Safety rules are introduced first: ensure gun is on safe, look through the gun before loading, unload before crossing obstacles, never carry a gun unsafely in the field, and only shoot with those who keep their guns safe. 1:21 - The film discusses universal principles of shooting whether it's geese, airplanes, or clay targets, noting that American manufactured guns fit most shooters if positioned correctly. 1:39 - Advice on choosing a gun includes considering balance and stock length, highlighting the necessity of clay target practice for skill development. 2:08 - The essentials of shooting according to Vic are swing, lead, and alignment. Swing means keeping the gun moving at the target's speed, lead is about shooting ahead of the target, and alignment ensures the gun's path matches the target's. 2:46 - Proper stance is detailed, suggesting facing 20° to the right for breaking targets, applicable to skeet, trap, or field shooting. 3:31 - Body position for shooting involves coiling up, with feet close together, weight on the left leg, and maintaining a balanced posture. 4:00 - Correct gun handling is taught, emphasizing a loose grip, proper positioning of hands, and not gripping too tightly which can cause jerkiness or flinching. 5:02 - Gun positioning involves sliding the stock along the cheek into the shoulder for consistent alignment, using the cheekbone as a guide. 5:29 - Relaxation is stressed, noting that tension causes poor shooting; opening the left hand can help relax the entire body. 6:09 - Vocal commands for targets should be calm to avoid muscle tightening, with Vic demonstrating a relaxed "pull". 6:19 - Eye dominance is discussed; if left eye dominant, options include shooting from the left shoulder, using one eye, or keeping both eyes open until the gun is shouldered. 6:48 - Shooting a shotgun is compared to pointing a finger, not aiming like a rifle, emphasizing intuitive movement and lead. 7:09 - Skeet fields are likened to hunting scenarios, offering various shots like straightaways, incomers, crossing shots, and doubles. 7:23 - Simple shots like straightaways and overhead incomers are explained, along with the concept of lead at different stations, showcasing how correct leading results in good breaks.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
